Orbetello Lagoon WWF Oasis

The Orbetello lagoon sits between two long sandbars linking the mainland to the rocky promontory of Monte Argentario, with the town of Orbetello built on a causeway across the middle. The WWF nature reserve on the northern shore is a stopover for thousands of migrating birds, including greater flamingos, ospreys, herons and black-winged stilts, with hides and marked trails through the reeds. Local fishermen still work the lagoon under a centuries-old cooperative, and bottarga and smoked eel from Orbetello are Slow Food presidia. Visitor information: closed shoes are required and domestic animals are not permitted. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars. Food may only be consumed in the picnic area at the entrance.
