Orbetello Lagoon WWF Oasis
Oasi WWF Laguna di Orbetello
A shallow coastal lagoon on the Tuscan Maremma, one of Italy's most important bird sanctuaries.
The Orbetello lagoon sits between two long sandbars linking the mainland to the rocky promontory of Monte Argentario, with the town of Orbetello built on a causeway across the middle. The WWF nature reserve on the northern shore is a stopover for thousands of migrating birds, including greater flamingos, ospreys, herons and black-winged stilts, with hides and marked trails through the reeds. Local fishermen still work the lagoon under a centuries-old cooperative, and bottarga and smoked eel from Orbetello are Slow Food presidia.
Visitor information: closed shoes are required and domestic animals are not permitted. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars. Food may only be consumed in the picnic area at the entrance. The visitor entrance cannot be reached on foot or by bicycle. Telephone and WhatsApp: +39 388 4231098.
Opening arrangements and visits can vary. Check the official WWF page or contact the reserve before travelling.
