Paestum Archaeological Area

Founded by Greek colonists as Poseidonia around 600 BC, Paestum preserves three Doric temples that are among the most complete surviving anywhere in the Greek world, including Italy. The Temple of Neptune, the Temple of Hera and the Temple of Athena stand in a wide grassy plain within a circuit of ancient walls, alongside the forum, amphitheatre and swimming pool of the later Roman town. The site museum holds the painted slabs of the Tomb of the Diver, a rare survival of Greek figurative painting. The surrounding Sele plain is also the home of buffalo mozzarella. Published visitor information currently states opening from 8:30am–7:30pm, with ticket-office closure and last entry to the archaeological area at 6:30pm.
