Royal Palace of Caserta

The Reggia di Caserta was commissioned in 1752 by Charles VII of Naples and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli as a rival to Versailles. It has some twelve hundred rooms, a monumental staircase of honour, and a park stretching three kilometres to the Great Cascade, fed by the Carolino aqueduct. The English Garden at the far end was one of the first informal gardens in Italy. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the aqueduct and the nearby silk-working colony of San Leucio, and its interiors have appeared in several major films.
