Taormina Ancient Theatre

The Teatro Antico di Taormina was cut into the rock in the third century BC by the Greeks and substantially rebuilt by the Romans, who adapted it for gladiatorial games. It is the second largest ancient theatre in Sicily and by far the most dramatically sited: the broken brick scaenae frons opens directly onto a view of Mount Etna and the curve of the Ionian coast. The theatre is still in use, hosting the Taormina Film Festival and a summer concert season. Early morning is the best time to visit before the coach groups arrive.
