Valley of the Temples
Valle dei Templi
A vast Greek archaeological park above Agrigento, with a ridge of Doric temples facing the sea.
The Valle dei Templi covers around thirteen hundred hectares on a ridge below Agrigento, the remains of Akragas, once one of the richest cities of the Greek world. Seven Doric temples line the ancient walls, the Temple of Concordia being among the best preserved anywhere thanks to its later use as a church. The park also holds the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus with its telamon figures, a Hellenistic-Roman quarter, early Christian catacombs and the Kolymbethra garden of citrus and almond trees. Evening openings in summer light the temples after dark.
