Villa Romana del Casale

Hidden under a landslide for some seven hundred years, the Villa Romana del Casale was excavated in the twentieth century to reveal roughly thirty-five hundred square metres of polychrome floor mosaic, the largest and finest collection surviving from the Roman world. The scenes range from hunting expeditions across the Great Hunt corridor to the famous athletes in bikini-like garments, mythological subjects and everyday life. The villa was probably a grand country estate of the early fourth century AD and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site set in the wooded hills of central Sicily. Ticket-office telephone: +39 0935 680036.
